Oats Upma (Serves: 2; Preparation Time: 25 minutes)

I like  my food to be flavorful…… and yummy!! That’s one reason I could never bring myself to eat oats, the boring way they’re meant to be eaten. Yet, knowing how nutritious they are, I keep searching for  interesting ways to include it in my breakfast. Earlier, I had shared the recipe for Oats Chilla which many of you tried and the  babies I am told, loved it! 

Interestingly, the Oats Upma tastes better the  regular sooji upma that we all are so  used to. I believe Oats Upma is an even healthier alternative both for  grown ups and children.


  • 1/3 cup oats (grind into powder)
  • 2 tbsp roasted semolina (sooji)
  • 1 small onion, chopped
  • 3-4 baby carrots, finely chopped
  • 3-4 beans, finely chopped
  • 4-5 curry leaves
  • 1/2 tsp mustard seeds (rai)
  • 1/2 tsp each of urad and chana dal (soaked in little water for about 15-20 minutes)
  • 1 tsp lemon juice
  • Salt, to taste
  • 1 tsp oil
  • About 1½ cup water

  • Heat the oil in a wok, add mustard seeds and allow them to crackle; then add curry leaves and soaked dal (soaking the dal in water, softens it), and quickly follow it up by adding onions, so that the dal does not burn

  • Once the onions turn translucent, add the vegetables and season them with salt; cover and cook for  4-5 minutes till they are nearly cooked

  • Add oats and sooji and dry roast  with the vegetables for about 1 minute

  • In a separate pan, boil water mixed with salt

  • Introduce the water into the wok containing oats and vegetables; cook for some more time while  stirring continuously to allow the oats to absorb water

  • Add the lemon juice

  • Garnish with coriander leaves and serve hot
The ratio of sooji/oats to water is 1:4 or 1:5 (dependent on how wet you like your upma to be)

I have blogged this recipe, keeping babies in mind; for the grown ups’ variant,  add green chillies and roasted peanuts as well
