Chicken Stew (Serves:3-4; Preparation Time: 25 minutes)

If sickness is inevitable, relax and enjoy it”; we have heard this many a time, just that its easier said than done….however, sickness can become tolerable if you have someone to pamper and take care.

This time. when I was down with a viral infection, I did precisely this….lied down and watched some TV, while my hubby dear made me an awesome ‘Chicken Stew’. Not only did it stand out in taste, it was also light to the stomach; and as Amit puts it, “Its pretty simple to stew”. So here goes this very easy recipe for the days when you’re feeling under the weather and don’t wish to indulge in anything elaborate.


  • 800 gms fresh chicken (tastes better than frozen)
  • 1 tbsp oil
  • 4-5 onion
  • 3-4 tomatoes
  • 7-8 cloves of garlic
  • 1″ piece of ginger
  • 7-8 black peppercorns
  • 3-4 cloves
  • 2 bay leaves
  • 1-2 small pieces of cinnamon stick
  • 1/2 tsp red chilli powder
  • Salt to taste
  • 1/4 tsp garam masala
  • Coriander leaves
  • Wash the chicken thoroughly, keep aside to allow the excess water to drain

  • Add ginger-garlic paste to about 2 tbsp of beaten curd and marinate the chicken in this paste for about half an hour (you can avoid this step if you’re short on time)

  • In a pressure cooker, heat the oil and add black peppercorns, cloves, bay leaves and cinnamon stick; once they crackle, add coarsely chopped onions

  • Wait for the onions to turn translucent, add the chopped tomatoes, followed with red chilli  powder and sauté for a 3-4 minutes

  • Now introduce the chicken and sauté for about 5-10 minutes (more the better); add half cup water, put the lid on and pressure cook on high flame; after the first whistle, simmer and cook for another 10-15 minutes (till the chicken is tender)

  • Add the garam masala, mix well and garnish with freshly chopped coriander leaves

  • Savor the flavorful stew with steamed rice!!
