Tangy and Spicy Black Chane (Serves:2-4; Preparation Time: 25 minutes)

Most of us are determined to lose weight, but tempting (read fatty/junk) food is the biggest deterrent in this long drawn programme. Dieting or eating healthy translates into eating insipid and boring food. However, I don’t want to give up binging on tasty food, so I am learning to spice up my ‘healthy’ food.   • 200 gms black chane (soaked overnight/at least 3-4 hours)
  • 4 large/5 medium sized tomatoes, pureed
  • 1 tsp refined oil
  • 1/2 tsp cumin
  • A small piece of ginger
  • A pinch of asafoetida
  • 1/4 tsp red chilli powder
  • 1 tsp dhania powder
  • Salt to taste
  • Fresh coriander leaves
  • In a pressure cooker, heat 1 tsp oil; add a pinch of asafoetida and cumin and allow them to crackle
  • Add grated ginger and sauté on medium flame for a while; add pureed tomatoes and spices (red chilli, dhania powder and salt) and keep cooking and stirring on low flame, till the water in the tomatoes almost dries up and it acquires a nice brownish red color (cooking tomatoes properly is really important because that brings out the real flavor)
  • Now add the chane and sauté for another 4-5 minutes; later, add about half a cup of water and lid the cooker
  • Pressure cook on high flame; after the first whistle, cook on low flame for another 10-15 minutes, or till the chane are tender
  • Open the lid and check if any water has remained; if any, dry the excess water by cooking for some more time without the  lid
  • Garnish with finely chopped coriander leaves and enjoy, accompanied with chapatis and dal

  • Chana Chat – Allow the spicy chane to cool, to them add finely chopped onions, tomatoes, green chillies, coriander leaves and some chat masala and enjoy as a snack!!
